About the museum

The Maison de la Magie occupies a large townhouse from 1856 opposite the royal château in Blois. It covers more than 2,000 m² across five levels and opened on June 1, 1998.

The site presents both collections on the history of magic and a show renewed every year, which, according to the museum, makes it the only public museum in Europe to offer both in one place. Several rooms are devoted to Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin, the watchmaker, magician and inventor born in Blois, whose life and work are also presented on the museum's website.

The participatory and interactive visit brings together some 700 objects and works: the Rotonde, the Grand Théâtre, the Hall of Great Illusions, the Passage des Mystères, the Houdini footbridge, the Robert-Houdin room, the Magic Attic (Grenier magique) and the Magicians' Salon. Every half hour, six mechanical dragon heads emerge from the windows of the façade, except in rain or bad weather.
