About the museum
Pierre Loti’s house was the family home of Julien Viaud, naval officer and writer known as Pierre Loti. After his first major literary successes from 1880 on, he transformed it into a theatrical setting filled with objects and souvenirs from his travels. The Renaissance room, the Gothic room, the mosque, the Turkish room and the Arab room are its most striking spaces. The mosque was built from 1895 to 1897, and the trompe-l’œil minaret dates from 1907.
In 1969, the city of Rochefort bought the house from Samuel, Loti’s son. It became a municipal museum in 1973 and is now a listed historic monument, carrying the “Musée de France” designation and the “Maison des Illustres” label. It is one of the few writer’s houses that still retains its original furniture and collections.
In 2012, the city closed the house for a large-scale restoration, which cost more than €13 million excluding VAT and was completed in 2025. The aim was to recreate the house as it was at Loti’s death in 1923, and to reopen rooms that had previously been inaccessible. Visitors now discover it in small groups of 10 people, with a guide or an audio guide.
