About the museum
The Péronne municipal museum has occupied a floor of the town hall since 1877. It takes its name from Charles Alfred Danicourt (1837–1887), its founder, whose bequest forms the core of the collections. The holdings were saved during both World Wars.
The archaeological collections range from prehistory to the Middle Ages. They include flint tools from the Palaeolithic to the Neolithic, finds from a Gallo-Roman villa at Athies, jewellery and Merovingian objects from local excavations, and medieval remains from the town.
The museum is also known for its collections of numismatics, glyptics and ancient and medieval goldsmithing, notably a series of Gaulish coins representing all the known Gaulish peoples. There are also carved gemstones (intaglios and cameos) from Greece, Rome and Egypt.
The fine-arts section includes paintings by local, national and international artists, a rich collection of prints, engravings and preparatory drawings, plans and views of the town, and a significant photographic archive.
