About the museum
The museum is housed in the Hôtel de la Monnaie, a Renaissance mansion built in 1591 in the centre of Pont-à-Mousson and listed as a historic monument. The town acquired its collections between 1982 and 1999, and the museum opened in 1999. It has held the Musée de France label since 2003.
The first rooms tell the story of the town, shaped by the founding of the University of Lorraine in Pont-à-Mousson in 1572. Since 2006 one room has been devoted to the Fonderies de Pont-à-Mousson, and another to the popular prints of Pont-à-Mousson (imagerie populaire mussipontaine), whose colourful lithographs delighted generations of children and adults.
The upper floors present a set of lacquered papier-mâché furniture and objects in 19th-century chinoiserie style, produced mainly by the firm Adt. The museum also holds old printed works, bibliophile books and local history collections. A digital route with augmented reality, games and an audio guide completes the visit.
