About the museum

The Musée Bernard Boesch belongs to the City of La Baule-Escoublac but is located in the neighboring commune of Le Pouliguen, in the villa “Les Tamarins”. Bernard Boesch (1914–2005) was a painter and architect. After an initial career as a painter, he turned to architecture and took part in the rebuilding of the Atlantic coast after the Second World War. His work, influenced by Fauvism and by encounters with Matisse, Dufy, Buffet or Walch, evolved over 75 years of creation toward geometric, minimalist forms.

On his death, Bernard Boesch and his wife Nancy bequeathed to the City the villa and a collection of more than 1,400 works, with the mission of promoting art and artists. The villa, built in the early 20th century in Breton style, was completely renovated in 2013 by the Poilane architectural firm. The work was financed by the bequest, the Fondation du patrimoine, Cap Atlantique and the Département. The museum opened in May 2014.

Facing the bay of Le Pouliguen, the museum hosts temporary exhibitions, retrospectives and art events. Across the street, a studio house hosts artists in residence for three months; it is open to visitors depending on whether the artist is present.
