About the museum
The Bergerac Tobacco Museum was founded in 1950 at the initiative of the Direction des musées de France. Reorganised in the 1980s, it was installed in the Maison Peyrarède, a 17th-century mansion renovated by the City of Bergerac, and inaugurated in January 1983. It holds the “Musée de France” label.
The Maison Peyrarède, also known as the Château Henri IV, is located in the historic centre. Built for a wealthy bourgeois family, it shows the transition from Renaissance to Classical architecture. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1947.
The permanent display comprises four rooms, each devoted to a theme. The museum traces the cultural history of tobacco, a plant native to the Americas that spread to Africa and Europe and then to Asia, and it presents objects from many regions of the world. The first room covers local tobacco growing, which has been present in the Dordogne since the 17th century. A short collection on local history, with a few archaeological pieces, completes the display. The museum makes clear that it does not promote tobacco and is not aimed only at smokers.
