About the museum
The Musée d’art contemporain de Marseille, also known as [mac], opened in 1994. Its collection stems from an exceptional body of modern and contemporary art, first assembled at the Musée Cantini, and comprises about a thousand works.
The collection is historically built on the rupture introduced by the Nouveaux Réalistes. It also includes major ensembles of Figuration narrative, Arte Povera, American conceptual and performance art, Fluxus and Supports/Surfaces. It is now expanding into installation, digital creation and video, with artists such as Julien Prévieux, Zineb Sedira or Kader Attia.
The exhibitions of the collection are designed in connection with current concerns. The museum’s garden, laid out with mounds and hollows, hosts sculptures by Jean-Michel Alberola, César, Erik Dietman, Fabrice Gygi and Marc Quer.
