About the museum
The geology museum occupies the ground floor of the Pierre Sineux university library on campus 1 of the University of Caen Normandy, with its own separate entrance. The university's geology collections hold very large numbers of fossil, mineral and rock specimens, which are kept in these museum rooms. The museum owes its creation to Lionel Dupret, honorary associate professor of geology.
More than 800 objects are displayed in cases, tracing the long geological history of Normandy. They include some of the oldest rocks in France, 2 billion years old, as well as the fossilized fauna and flora of ancient seas: trilobites, ammonites, fish, reptiles and algae, and the remains of Normandy's oldest dinosaur.
The museum has no regular opening hours. It opens on special occasions, such as the Fête de la science (Science Festival) or the European Heritage Days. Each visitor receives a guidebook that allows them to explore the rooms independently.
