About the museum

The museum was established in the 1950s on the ground floor of the Villa Saraleguinea, an early 20th-century Basque-style house, to house the donation of the sculptor Georges Clément de Swiecinski. This collection includes sculptures, ceramics and many drawings. The villa stands in the heart of a landscaped park where sculptures by Claude Viseux and Dominique André and mosaics by Michel Duboscq are displayed.

In 1984, Roman remains were discovered near the Guéthary railway station; successive excavations revealed a fish-salting factory from the High Empire. The museum's archaeological collection includes, among other things, an exceptional funerary epitaph, unique in southern Aquitaine.

The collections also hold first editions and objects of the Béarnais poet Paul-Jean Toulet, who spent the last years of his life in Guéthary, as well as part of his correspondence. Through Swiecinski's work, the museum also tells the story of this village of fishermen and farmers that became an elegant seaside resort. Since 1985, it has hosted contemporary art exhibitions from May to October.
