About the museum
The Hôtel Dubocage de Bléville takes its name from Michel Joseph Dubocage (1676–1727), a navigator and merchant who bought this house on his return from a nine-year voyage to China. With his son Michel Joseph Dubocage de Bléville (1707–1756), a natural historian and alderman, he ran a maritime trading house there, which also included a cabinet of curiosities. The main buildings date from the 17th century and open onto a formal French garden.
In the 19th century part of the estate housed the “maison des veuves”, a refuge for the wives of seafarers, particularly those of the Transat shipping company. The building is now a museum of the City of Le Havre, attached to the museums of art and history.
The collections tell the story of Le Havre, its major political events and its maritime trade, with prints, plans, models and paintings. One room is devoted to the two Dubocages. The museum is temporarily closed until December 2027.
