About the museum
The museum is housed in the collegiate church of Sainte-Madeleine, in the heart of the Battant district in Besançon. The church is the work of architect Nicolas Nicole, whose work began in 1746 and extended over the second half of the 18th century. The museum was created by a volunteer association, the Association culturelle pour la sauvegarde du patrimoine de l’église Sainte-Madeleine, after the restoration of the Jacquemard, the figure that strikes the bell in the district.
The museum has three exhibition rooms. It preserves religious treasures, including a collection of liturgical textiles and rare 17th-century straw embroidery.
The museum also evokes five centuries of history of the Bousbots district, with objects linked to religious and local life: the former winegrowers of Battant, the Jacquemard, or the Torah hidden in the church’s ouvroir during the Second World War.
