About the museum
The museum is run by the Association de la Musique Mécanique des Gets, founded in 1985 by passionate volunteers. Its aim is to gather, restore and revive mechanical musical instruments, and it has presented its collections to the public since 1988. The museum is housed in the oldest building in the village, a former 16th-century house.
The collections have grown over the years through purchases at auctions, acquisitions from private owners and antique dealers, and donations. Every piece is restored and brought back into working order before it is displayed. The museum saved a wooden carousel from 1871, presented as the oldest French carousel of this type, and a philharmonic organ can be found in the church of Les Gets.
An extension in 2013 brought the exhibition area to more than 1,500 m². The museum now consists of two buildings linked by a semi-underground gallery, the Galerie Impériale. It presents more than 1,000 instruments: salon, dance, fairground, street and cinema organs, music boxes, mechanical pianos, orchestrions, automata, phonographs and jukeboxes.
