About the museum

From 1986 to 2019, the City of Mougins carried out its photography projects at the Musée de la photographie André Villers, which now serves as the administrative headquarters of the Centre de la photographie. From 2013 to 2018, the museum notably presented the winners of the HSBC Photography Prize.

At the end of 2018, the firm Griesmar Architectes, working with Atelier Gabrielli Architecture and Anthony Hamon (HA agency), was selected to convert the village’s former presbytery into a photography center. The jury chose a project that respected the traditional architecture. The City called on François Cheval to support the design team, then appointed him artistic director in 2020, the year the renovation work was documented.

The building offers about 330 m² of usable space across three levels, with a reception area, exhibition spaces and meeting rooms. Other sites in the village house the administration, storage, an artist residence, educational workshops and a documentation center.

The André Villers collection (1930–2016) includes more than 300 works, among them portraits of Picasso and his contemporaries. Other photographers are represented, including Lucien Clergue, David Douglas Duncan, Edward Quinn and Jacques-Henri Lartigue. The Centre is a municipal service of the City of Mougins.
