About the museum

The Musée de la Photographie Charles Nègre is a municipal museum of the City of Nice. Since 2016 it has been located in the heart of Vieux-Nice, in a former industrial building: the Préfecture substation, commissioned in the 1930s to supply electricity to the neighborhood. The building has kept its industrial architecture and an old overhead crane.

The museum bears the name of Charles Nègre, whose holdings are presented on the museum’s website together with other elements of the collection, which can be consulted online. A section of the site also offers thematic views of the works held.

Throughout the year the museum presents temporary exhibitions, solo or group shows, devoted to major names in photography. An adjoining gallery is reserved for regional photographic work. The museum also offers guided tours, artistic and cultural education projects, and a virtual escape game that invites visitors to discover Nice around 1865. It received the Qualité Tourisme label in 2018.
