About the museum

The Musée de la Thiérache, presented as a heritage house (maison du patrimoine), is located in the town center of Vervins, in the large house known as the House of the 1598 Peace Treaty, which belongs to the town. The building retains old kitchens of the new castle dating from the 16th century.

The collections are linked to the history of the Société archéologique et historique de Vervins et de la Thiérache, which gathered mainly archaeological objects and local folk culture from its members. The museum also houses a faithful reconstruction of an authentic regional kitchen from the 19th century.

Three rooms present the collections: archaeology and paleontology, with objects from excavations of ancient Vervins, prehistory and numerous fossils; the “Pays d'art et d'histoire”, with engravings, drawings, furniture, statues, paintings and old maps; and the history of Vervins, devoted to social and religious life, abbeys and churches. The museum also holds an important collection of books on history and archaeology, as well as a collection of old local newspapers that can be consulted on site.
