About the museum
The Musée de Pontarlier was founded in 1977. It occupies one of the oldest townhouses in the town, dating from the 15th century. The building retains a fine set of Art Nouveau stained-glass windows and painted beams with historiated motifs from the 17th century.
The museum is a municipal institution. It presents its collections over three levels. The route covers the history of Pontarlier and that of absinthe, which brought the town its fame in the Haut-Doubs region.
It also holds archaeological collections, from prehistory to the Middle Ages, as well as Franche-Comté paintings and faience. Temporary exhibitions on a variety of subjects are held regularly.
The museum also offers workshops for adults and children, lectures and themed events throughout the year. It welcomes groups, who receive a reduced rate from more than 10 people.
