About the museum

The museum is housed in the abbey château of Le Monastier-sur-Gazeille, in Haute-Loire. It was conceived and created by visual artist and screenwriter Patrice Rey, who is responsible for the research, texts, illustrations, figurines, stage design and books that came out of this work.

The route draws on ethnographic collecting carried out in the area for over a century, notably among very elderly people on the Velay plateaus. Several hundred original figurines and paintings, presented in dioramas and series of captioned paintings, illustrate the oral tradition of rural life: tales, legends, peasant medicine, superstitions, ghosts and witchcraft.

The tone is both educational and playful. The museum also offers storytelling visits, night visits, publications and off-site activities.
