About the museum

The Musée du chocolat is the visitor route through a chocolate factory in Bayonne, the Atelier du Chocolat. It was created in 2006 by the company’s founders, Marie-Pierre and Serge Andrieu, with the aim of sharing the heart of their craft: making chocolate.

The tour takes about an hour and a half. It covers the cultivation of the cacao tree, the history of cacao and chocolate, and the arrival of chocolate in Europe and in Bayonne. An exhibition of antique machines dating from the early twentieth century shows how chocolate was worked in the past. A film of about twenty minutes follows the cacao bean from harvest to processing.

Visitors also see the chocolatiers at work in the laboratory, behind a glass wall. The tour ends in the shop area with a tasting of several chocolates. Children can take part in a chocolate painting workshop.
