About the museum

The Musée du pays d’Ussel opened in 1976 and is run by the town of Ussel. It changed location and format several times before receiving the Musée de France designation in 2003. It is organized around three areas: religious art, popular arts and traditions, and graphic arts.

The museum occupies several buildings in the old quarter. The Hôtel Bonnot de Bay, at 12 rue Michelet, presents the tools and workshops of craftsmen of the past, tapestries from La Marche and objects of everyday life in Haute-Corrèze. The Moncourier-Beauregard house displays objects related to the preparation and preservation of food, as well as a harness maker’s workshop.

The printing workshop houses the machines of two printing businesses from Ussel, one letterpress and one lithographic. In summer, a lithographer leads workshops there, and the Chapel of the Penitents houses collections of religious art.
