About the museum

The Musée Gallé-Juillet brings together two houses built on the ground floor of the former medieval castle of Creil, on the Île Saint-Maurice: the Gallé-Juillet house and the Faience House. The site is listed as a historic monument and carries the “Musée de France” label. Its collections comprise around 15,000 works and objects.

The Gallé-Juillet house tells the story of a Creil family from the French Revolution to the First World War. Its rooms, kept in their Belle Époque state, display signed furniture, works by Émile Gallé, decorative objects, ceramics and paintings. The visit also looks at the fate of the family’s youngest child, Maurice Gallé, who died during the war, and presents the Creil lock treasure, a group of Roman silver and bronze pieces from the 3rd century.

The Faience House is devoted to the Creil faience factory, which operated from 1797 to 1895 and which Gustave Flaubert mentions in “L’Éducation sentimentale”. Three rooms present the history of the company and its workers, the techniques used to make fine earthenware, and hundreds of pieces produced at Creil, from the most ordinary to the rarest.
