About the museum

The open-air geological museum is located on the site of the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Limoges. It displays rocks weighing one to three tons each, from across the Limousin and its edges. They tell a geological story of more than 500 million years: the formation of the Variscan mountain range 300 million years ago, Tertiary volcanism, the fall of the Rochechouart meteorite, an episode on a seashore near Brive and the carving of deep valleys.

The project was presented in 2008, the International Year of Planet Earth, to the dean of the faculty, who proposed a central location in the park of the La Borie campus. The quarrying and building materials industry (regional delegation of UNICEM) and the company SOCOBA of Brive took part in the project; transport of the rocks and signage were funded half by the industry and half by the faculty.

At the foot of each block, a label gives the necessary explanations; a large totem with the geological map of the Limousin and information panels complete the display.
