About the museum
The La Châtre museum was founded in 1876 at the initiative of local scholars. In 1888, the bequest of General de Beaufort brought an ornithological collection of about 2,500 birds, as well as ceramics and ancient coins. In 1937, Jean Depruneaux bought the medieval keep (donjon) to house his private museum, rich in documents, manuscripts and works relating to George Sand. The Musée de la Vallée Noire opened in 1938 and in 1939 received the municipal collections. In 1954, for the 150th anniversary of the writer's birth, it took the name Musée George Sand et de la Vallée Noire.
After the keep and the collections were bequeathed to the town in 1967, major donations enriched the Sand holdings, and in 2014 a collection of hurdy-gurdies (vielles à roue) was added. The museum received the Musée de France label in 2003. Its collections of nearly 6,000 works and documents cover fine arts, graphic arts, archaeology, natural history and folk arts.
It closed in 2016 for a major collections project and the transfer of works to external storage, and reopened in 2020 as a “pocket museum” (musée de poche) in the Hôtel de Villaines. This space closed on September 21, 2025: the town is preparing a new museum across the whole site of the Hôtel de Villaines and the Square Raymonde-Vincent, covering nearly 2,400 m². Reopening is planned for 2029–2030. In the meantime, the museum offers off-site exhibitions and virtual exhibitions.
