About the museum
The museum was founded in 1975 thanks to volunteers from the Jadis Allevard association. The first exhibition took place in the Maison des Forges, the former offices of the Société des Hauts-Fourneaux et Forges d’Allevard. The collections grew over the years through donations and the work of volunteers.
In 2005 the museum became municipal, and it later received the Musée de France label. Since 2016 it has been run by the Le Grésivaudan community of municipalities. After a major renovation, it reopened to the public in 2023.
It now occupies the former casino of the spa park, built in 1870 to entertain those taking the waters. The architectural firm Atelier 17C restored the building while respecting its heritage setting, with an entrance hall and shop, rooms for permanent and temporary exhibitions and an education space. The permanent exhibition tells how iron ore, thermal water and snow shaped the Pays d’Allevard.
