About the museum
The museum occupies the former Royal Military School of Brienne, which opened in 1776: Napoleon Bonaparte was a pupil there from 1779 to 1784. Before that, the Minims ran a religious school on the site. After the Revolution the buildings were sold as national property, partly demolished, and then occupied by a Carmelite convent, a college and finally a barracks, the Caserne Bonaparte.
The town regained the site in 1926 and had it listed as a historic monument in 1933. The Musée Napoléon opened in 1969, at the initiative of local councillors who wanted to honor the former Brienne pupil. Three rooms were added in 1995 thanks to the bequest of Mr. Devinot. Closed for renovation in May 2016, it reopened in January 2018 with a new entrance, a modernized display and renewed themes. It holds the “Musée de France” and “Monument historique” labels.
The collections evoke Napoleon’s schooling at Brienne, the Campagne de France of 1814, the works bequeathed by Mr. Devinot, the Restoration and the Napoleonic legend. The museum also houses the Treasure of the churches of the Parc de la forêt d’Orient. The route is organized around four themes: the shaping of an image, the tactician and strategist, the reformer and the intimate Napoleon.
