About the museum
The museum was founded in 1931 by Pastor Samuel Eynard, based on his collection of documents and objects on the history of La Rochelle’s Protestants. It occupies annexe rooms of the Protestant temple on Rue Saint-Michel, near the town hall and the port, and was completely renovated in 1995.
The visit is arranged in three chronological rooms. The first covers the spread of Reformation ideas up to the Renaissance, the second persecution and the “Désert” period after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, and the third the modern and contemporary history of Protestantism in La Rochelle. Themes such as the siege of La Rochelle in 1627–1628, printers, Protestants and the sea, or links with the New World are explored on the museum’s website.
The collection comes largely from Eynard’s collection and includes some works by John Calvin. The museum holds the “Musée de France” designation.
