About the museum
The Städtische Museum Saarburg is housed in the former electoral mill, whose origins date back to 1657 and which stands right by the Saarburg waterfall. Under the name Amüseum am Wasserfall, the house combines a town history museum with a municipal gallery and the city's cultural office.
The permanent exhibition is devoted to Saarburg's traditional trades: tanner, shoemaker, printer, apothecary, bell founder and boatman. A turbine is also shown, presented as the oldest still in operation. On the ground floor, a good parlor more than a hundred years old has invited visitors to linger since 2016; since 2023 an audio app has also guided visitors through the exhibition at twelve stations.
The gallery in the house presents contemporary art and photography in regularly changing exhibitions. The house is run by the city of Saarburg; a friends' association supports the municipal museums, which also include the Mühlenmuseum (mill museum) and the Museum Glockengießerei Mabilon (Mabilon bell foundry museum).
