About the museum

Schoolteacher Johann Schneider discovered traces of a Roman settlement between Borg and Oberleuken more than a century ago and excavated the first small areas. Since April 1, 1987, the site has been scientifically researched by the Kulturstiftung (cultural foundation) of the Merzig-Wadern district together with the State Office for Monument Preservation, the labor administration and the municipality of Perl. It turned out that one of the largest Roman villa complexes in the Saar-Moselle region lies here.

In 1994 it was decided to rebuild the entire estate based on the excavation results and the state of Roman villa research. In the following years, the villa bath with the tavern, the manor house with its museum furnishings, the designed inner courtyard, the residential and service wing, the gatehouse and the Roman kitchen were built. Gardens were added to round out the picture of Roman rural life.

Excavations over an area of more than 7.5 hectares continue and repeatedly change the appearance of the site. In the manor house, a museum shows finds from Borg and from the Merzig-Wadern district.
