About the museum

The original and cast collection belongs to the Classical and Provincial Roman Archaeology department of the University of Trier and serves primarily for teaching. Students learn to identify and classify real pieces and copies of Greek and Roman antiquity and its neighboring regions.

The holdings consist of originals purchased from the art trade and copies of ancient works made by renowned casting workshops. Especially in the Roman section, loans from private collectors and public museums are added, for example from the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier (Rhineland State Museum). The collection is supplemented by an extensive drawing collection belonging to the institute.

As part of their studies, students plan and design their own exhibitions and practice the conservation of ancient objects. A collection team is currently working on reviewing the history of the collection and on the scholarly cataloguing of its holdings.
