Bamberger Krippenmuseum

Private museum on Bamberg's Sandstraße with historic nativity scenes from four centuries and around the world – open during Advent and the Christmas season.

Opening hoursAdmission €6

About the museum

The Bamberger Krippenmuseum is a private museum that the collector Erk Baumann opened in November 2001 on Obere Sandstraße, just a few steps from the Schlenkerla at the foot of the Domberg. It is based on his extensive collection of nativity scenes, which is counted among the largest private holdings of its kind in Europe and includes pieces from more than 70 countries.

On around 300 square meters, the museum shows a selection that varies greatly in origin, date and material: from 18th-century nativity scenes to contemporary works. The display is complemented by further objects related to Christmas. The operators place importance on continually adding new, special pieces to the exhibition and see the museum as a contribution to keeping alive the more than 400-year-old custom of building nativity scenes.

The museum is one of the stations of the Bamberger Krippenstadt, which presents numerous nativity scenes in churches, museums and public places every year during Advent. It is therefore regularly open mainly from the end of November until Epiphany; in the remaining months, visits and tours are possible by arrangement. In the ticket area, a small shop invites browsing for new and old nativity scenes as well as antiques.
