About the museum

The museum is based on a collection that Rainer Moers began in Cologne in 1964. From 1975 to 1989 it toured as a traveling exhibition through some 25 West German cities as well as the Netherlands, Austria and Hungary. In 1989 it found a permanent home of just under 60 square meters in Cologne, Liverpool's twin city, which was given up again in 1999.

Looking for more space, the operators negotiated with numerous cities and chose Halle. On April 8, 2000, the museum opened at Alter Markt 12, a Baroque townhouse from 1708 in the old town. The exhibition space grew from around 350 square meters at first to nearly 600; a third floor was added in 2007, and in 2010 a room where visitors can try out the video game "The Beatles: Rock Band."

The museum is privately run without public funding. The floors follow a chronological order: the first floor tells the band's story up to the breakup in 1970, the second floor covers the solo careers from the 1970s to the 1990s, and the third floor the period since 2000. Only about a fifth of the collection is on display, including autographs from the Hamburg years, private photos from 1962, records from all over the world including East German (GDR) pressings, and all kinds of fan merchandise.
