About the museum

The Bibelhaus ErlebnisMuseum, or BIMU for short, opened in 2003 in a former church near Frankfurt's Museumsufer. It is the major project of the Frankfurter Bibelgesellschaft (Frankfurt Bible Society), which was co-founded in 1816 and is considered the city's oldest church association. The work is funded mainly by the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau and by the City of Frankfurt.

The permanent exhibition "Die Welt hinter den Texten" spans three levels and is divided into four experience worlds: the Old Testament, the New Testament, the sources of the Bible, and how it was spread. On display are original archaeological finds, reconstructed everyday settings such as a nomad's tent, a house from biblical times or a temple model, and a medieval book workshop.

Since 2010 the museum has worked with the Israel Antiquities Authority, which lends a substantial part of the finds on a long-term basis. The museum sees itself as an open place for people of every origin and conviction and promotes dialogue between Judaism, Christianity and Islam. According to the museum, around 20,000 visitors in about 1,000 groups come each year.
