Deutsches Pferdemuseum

Museum on the cultural history of the horse in a former cavalry barracks in Verden – from the prehistoric horse to modern equestrian sport.

Opening hoursAdmission from €5 Wheelchair accessible

About the museum

The foundation was laid by the Verdener Heimatbund (local history society), which began collecting material on horses in the region after its founding in 1918; a collection folder from 1924 is regarded as the nucleus. The driving forces were Wilhelm Ahrens and the hippologist Erich Clausen, who looked after the collection on a voluntary basis until 1969.

In 1965 the horse museum was separated from the Heimatbund as an independent institution under the name Deutsches Pferdemuseum. Under Clausen's successor Hans Joachim Köhler, the hippological library grew considerably, and in 1974 the museum received a replica of the Tempelhüter monument as its landmark. Until 1999 the museum was housed in a half-timbered building in the old town.

In 2000 it moved into the stables and barracks rooms of the neoclassical cavalry barracks of 1831 on Holzmarkt. Across roughly 1,600 square meters, the exhibition leads from the evolution of the horse through agriculture, mining, the military, and the horse trade to equestrian sport; the estate of dressage rider Josef Neckermann is also on display.

The museum includes a large photo archive and a hippological library of around 18,000 titles. In 2025 the museum received the Museumsgütesiegel Niedersachsen und Bremen (museum quality seal of Lower Saxony and Bremen) for the second time.
