About the museum

In 1989, railway workers, above all locomotive drivers from the Engelsdorf locomotive depot, founded an interest group under the umbrella of the Kulturbund that wanted to save old steam locomotives from the scrapyard. Their original goal was a railway museum on the grounds of the Bayerischer Bahnhof, whose name the association has borne since 1990. With the end of the GDR, however, plans for a state-supported museum there fell through.

In 1992 the association acquired its first steam locomotive, the 52 5448, which has stood on museum track 24 in Leipzig Hauptbahnhof since 1997. In June 1995 the association moved into locomotive shed I of the recently abandoned Leipzig-Plagwitz depot in the Kleinzschocher district. Workshops, the office and the permanent exhibition on railway history have been located there ever since.

The core of the collection is rolling stock: the operational steam locomotive 52 8154, regarded as the last serviceable standard-gauge steam locomotive in the Leipzig area, further class 52 locomotives, small diesel locomotives and passenger coaches of the GDR era, including a Städteexpress coach and a Mitropa dining car. With the museum train the association regularly runs special excursions through Saxony, Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt; the Leipziger Eisenbahntage take place twice a year.
