Eisenbahnmuseum Darmstadt-Kranichstein
Railroad museum in the former Kranichstein locomotive depot with a roundhouse, turntable, steam locomotives, and historic cars.
About the museum
The Kranichstein locomotive depot was built in 1898 together with a new marshalling yard in northeastern Darmstadt, because the old station could no longer handle the growing freight traffic. Locomotives for freight trains were maintained and housed here; a branch of the repair works took care of the freight cars.
The Museumsbahn association, founded in 1970, originally only wanted to run a historic steam train. From 1971 it housed its first vehicles in the Kranichstein engine shed, and as the collection grew and public interest increased, the site opened as a railroad museum on May 29, 1976. It is considered Germany's first dedicated railroad museum. Because the Bundesbahn (federal railway) banned steam locomotives from its tracks from 1977, the association set up its own museum line between Darmstadt Ost and Bessunger Forsthaus in 1984.
After the marshalling yard closed in 2002, the concept was expanded to preserve the site as an industrial and transportation monument. Since the 2010s, Darmstadt's railroad associations have jointly formed the "Bahnwelt Darmstadt-Kranichstein", which also includes the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Historische HEAG-Fahrzeuge with its tram museum.
The collection includes steam, diesel, and electric locomotives, passenger and freight cars, road trailers for heavy-load transport, and exhibitions on uniforms, tickets, track construction, and signal box technology. Several vehicles are operational and are used for special trips on the Deutsche Bahn network; traditional techniques such as riveting are passed on in the workshops.
