About the museum

The Fliesenmuseum (Tile Museum) belongs to Fliesenhandel Schittek GmbH, a dealer specializing in historic and surplus tiles. After the company moved to Hamburg-Sinstorf, the collection was set up in 2007 as a permanent exhibition on the upper floor of the company building.

Covering around 250 square meters, the museum traces the development of tiles in Germany from the late 19th century to the present: from decorative tiles of the Gründerzeit (Wilhelminian era), Art Nouveau, and Art Deco to the colorful patterns of the postwar and economic miracle years and modern industrial tiles. Fully furnished bathrooms from different decades – complete with bath heaters, fittings, and matching fixtures – illustrate how domestic culture has changed.

The collection also displays the tools and working methods of the tile-laying trade, documents such as catalogs and master craftsman certificates, a Meissen tiled stove and a working Hamburg tiled kitchen range, as well as artist tiles and architectural ceramics by Salvador Dalí, Hilde Hamann, Richard Kuöhl, and the Berlin mosaic workshop Puhl & Wagner, among others. What makes it special is its close connection to the ongoing business: tiles on view in the museum are sometimes still sold downstairs in the shop as replacements for renovation projects.
