About the museum

The core of the collection was assembled by Niebüll pastor Friedrich August Feddersen (1838–1909), who began systematically gathering Frisian antiquities after 1864. After his death the holdings passed to the Frisian Association for Niebüll, Deezbüll and Surroundings, which he had co-founded in 1879 and which still owns and runs the museum on a volunteer basis.

In 1929 the association was able to buy an old farmhouse with donations, on the edge of the Kornkoog, a former geest island on whose western side the North Sea once began. The farm had previously worked around 20 hectares of land. The 23-metre-long barn, originally built on at an angle, was demolished after the Second World War. The building, which has stood unchanged for over 200 years, is an Uthland Frisian longhouse with a post-and-beam frame and a thatched roof; its oak frame was meant to remain standing even if a storm surge pushed in the walls.

A hallway divides the house into living and working areas. Visitors see the Dörnsch as the living room, the Mitteldörnsch of the retired farmer, the unheated Pesel as the best parlour, the kitchen with an open hearth, the pantry with a baking oven, the Klüterkammer, as well as the stable and farmhands' room. Among the treasures is a Bible printed in 1726, restored with support from the Friesenstiftung.
