About the museum
In Keilhau near Rudolstadt, Friedrich Fröbel founded the Allgemeine Deutsche Erziehungsanstalt (General German Educational Institute) in 1817. The building where it all began still serves education today and houses the school museum.
With the school's 150th anniversary in view, the existing historical material was sorted and organized from 1965 onward. At the suggestion of the Japanese Fröbel researcher Masako Shoji, the then school principal Alexander Hübener set up a first small exhibition. After the lower building was renovated from 1990 to 1992, the museum found its permanent home there; since June 1992 it has displayed its exhibits in glass cases and on panels.
The exhibition comprises three rooms. The first is devoted to Fröbel's life and his fellow campaigners and shows, among other things, an original edition of "Menschenerziehung" ("The Education of Man") as well as parts of the Spielgaben (play gifts). The second tells the story of the school and its connection to the spirit of the Lützow Free Corps. The third focuses on teaching and upbringing, above all through handwritten notes by pupils and teachers from Fröbel's time. Further topics include products derived from Fröbel's play gifts, such as the Ankerbausteine (anchor blocks), and the institution's almost 50-year tradition of speech therapy.
The sponsor is the Neuer Thüringer Fröbelverein, which also looks after the Fröbel Archive with the historical school library on the grounds.
