Fürstliches Residenzschloss Detmold
Inhabited Renaissance palace of the princes of Lippe in Detmold’s old town, with state rooms, tapestries, porcelain, and guided tours.
About the museum
The palace originated as a moated castle built around 1200 on the site of an older manor and first mentioned in records in 1366. Since the Middle Ages it has been associated with the House of Lippe, whose counts and princes resided here.
The complex took on its present appearance from 1548: master builder Jörg Unkair began converting it into a four-wing palace with corner towers, and Cord Tönnis completed the entrance wing with its gatehouse in the 1550s. The result is considered one of the major works of the Weser Renaissance. Under Count Friedrich Adolf, the interiors were furnished in Baroque style with stucco and murals at the beginning of the 18th century; later generations added halls in the Empire and historicist styles.
The palace is still the residence of the zur Lippe family today and is operated by the Stiftung Residenzschloss Detmold. Visitors can see, among other rooms, the Flag Hall and the Ancestors’ Hall, the Red Hall, the King’s Halls, hunting rooms with the princely arms collection, and Flemish tapestries depicting scenes from the life of Alexander the Great. One special feature is a salon organ with a self-playing mechanism installed in 1916 for Prince Leopold IV; after decades of silence, it has been restored since 2021 and can be heard again.
