About the museum
The Bezirk Oberbayern (Upper Bavaria district) set up the gallery in 1998 in the foyer of its headquarters on Prinzregentenstraße, opposite the Haus der Kunst and on the edge of the Englischer Garten. From the start it offered artists living in Upper Bavaria a space to exhibit contemporary work in all disciplines – from painting and printmaking to sculpture, installation and photography. The gallery has no collection of its own; an expert jury selects the exhibitions through open calls, and the district funds the catalogs.
Since 2012 the gallery has followed the concept "Kunst inklusive!" (Art Inclusive!): in every show, artists with and without disabilities exhibit together, usually as double exhibitions. Accompanying programs include touch tours, workshops, artist talks and guided tours in Easy Language; events are interpreted into German Sign Language.
With this approach, the gallery has set standards for inclusive exhibitions and art education. It is certified under "Reisen für Alle" (Travel for All) in all categories and belongs to the "Museen inklusive!" network. In 2023 it celebrated 25 years of the gallery and ten years of "Kunst inklusive!".
