Granitzentrum Bayerischer Wald
Museum on geology and granite quarrying in the Bavarian Forest: multimedia "Steinwelten" and a show quarry in the former Schachet quarry near Hauzenberg.
About the museum
On the grounds of the former Schachet quarry, where work ended in 1985, the Granitzentrum Bayerischer Wald was built about two decades later. The new building was designed by the widely award-winning architecture firm Brückner & Brückner; the museum opened in 2005. It is run as a project of the district of Passau and the town of Hauzenberg, funded by the European Union and the Free State of Bavaria.
The exhibition "Steinwelten" (Worlds of Stone) is divided into two large areas. The "Zeit des Steins" (Time of Stone) explains with film, staged displays, and minerals how the granite formed and what a long path the rocks traveled through Earth's history to reach the Bavarian Forest. The "Zeit des Menschen" (Time of Man) is devoted to the quarrying and working of stone from early eras to industrialization – from the hard work in the quarry through transport to the craft of the stonemasons.
In the outdoor area, visitors can explore a show quarry with installations for extracting Hauzenberg granite. Since 2024/2025 the revised department "Granit und Eisenbahn" (Granite and Railway) has complemented the display, and a digital audio guide for the entire site was added. During Advent, the quarry is transformed into the setting of a Christmas market.
