About the museum
The museum of the municipality of Herrstein is located on the edge of the historic town center, in a school building erected in 1848/49 that is known locally as the "alte französische Schule" (old French school). It collects evidence of the history of the former administrative seat.
In the basement the focus is on geology as well as prehistory and early history around Herrstein. The former communal bread oven (Gemeindebackhaus) is also located there; it was shared by village residents until the 1950s, since in the narrow town center every private bread oven would have posed a fire risk. It is still fully functional and is fired up every year for the Martinimarkt in early November to bake Hunsrücker Bauernbrot (Hunsrück farmers' bread).
In the other rooms, documents, maps, photos and original objects show the development of the town since the 13th century. The largest room is devoted to everyday life and trades of earlier times, with household items, agricultural tools and the tools of craftsmen such as builders, blacksmiths and shoemakers.
