About the museum
At the start of the 800th anniversary celebrations of the municipality of Auetal, the Verein für Heimatpflege Auetal (association for local heritage) showed an exhibition of historical pictures and objects in the Rehren primary school in December 1982. This gave rise to the wish for a permanent exhibition space: the municipality made a classroom of the former Hattendorf school available to the association, and on May 1, 1984 the “Heimatstube Auetal” (local history room) opened there.
Today the local history museum presents its collection in a total of 20 rooms; an intact forge in an outbuilding is also part of it. The focus is on rural life and crafts of earlier times: a farmhouse parlor with kitchen, a spinning room, and workshops of a saddler, shoemaker, wheelwright and tailor convey the everyday life of bygone days. Added to these are a fossil and mineral collection and an extensive photo collection from the 16 districts of the municipality.
A highlight for school classes is the historical schoolroom, furnished as it was in 1920. The museum holds action days, special exhibitions and educational programs; civil wedding ceremonies can also take place in the house.
