About the museum

The Heimatmuseum Bodenheim focuses on the history of the town and its surroundings. It is run by the Bodenheim Heimatverein (local heritage association), which celebrated the museum's 40th anniversary in 2018, and is located in the Bürgerhaus Dolles (Dolles civic center) on Dollesplatz. Archaeological finds document settlement stretching far back: stone objects, roof tiles, clay vessels, coins, weapons, and jewelry tell the story from the Stone Age to modern times.

One special item is a hearth from the Early Iron Age, excavated by the heritage association itself. Finds and a model of an excavated Roman villa rustica illustrate life in Roman times; documents with the first mention of the town from the 8th century, as well as old town plans, cover later history. A small sacred section is devoted to St. Alban's Church, including a replica of an 11th-century baptismal font.

On the first upper floor, the museum shows Bodenheim's wine growing with many old implements, the flood disaster of the 19th century, and a fully furnished shoemaker's workshop from the first half of the 20th century. The museum also owns paintings by court painter Eduard von Heuß, of which only a few can be shown for lack of space, and it presents a special exhibition every year.
