About the museum

The local history museum Hohegeiß is located in the Alte Pfarre (Old Parsonage), a half-timbered house from 1644 and the oldest building in the mountain village, founded in 1444. The house is largely preserved in its original state: wide plank floors, a smokehouse and the old laundry room are part of it, as is a half-timbered panel that was given a glass pane during renovation so that the earlier construction method can be seen.

Themed rooms cover the founding of the village, the importance of mining for copper and iron ore, the livelihoods of residents, and the beginning of tourism in the 19th century. Furniture and tools from earlier centuries complement the rooms.

A separate section is devoted to the inner-German division, which ran right along the village. It shows models and originals, including a piece of border fence with a border post. The museum is run by the Museumsverein Hohegeiß e.V. (museum association). Civil wedding ceremonies also take place in the "Gute Stube" (best parlor).
