About the museum
The museum is located in the Lower Gate Tower of the old town, a 14th-century building where the night watchman once lived. It was founded in 1908 at the initiative of the Ansbach district official Rudolf Reubold as an "Altertumsmuseum" (antiquities museum). It consisted of a small folk culture museum in the form of a farmhouse and two rooms on town history; a separate antiquities association looked after the collection.
After the Second World War, the tower was used as emergency housing for families who had been bombed out, and the exhibits were stored haphazardly in the district court (Landgericht). In 1964 the town council decided to use the rooms as a museum again, and it reopened in 1967. After a general renovation of the tower in 1970, the pieces had to be moved out again; the reopening followed in 1973. The town is the sponsor, and the local heritage association looks after the museum.
The building took on its present form through decisions made in 1979: alongside a kitchen and sleeping room, a complete farmhouse dwelling was created, while shooting club shields, weapons and guild objects were moved to other buildings. Since the reopening in 1989, the museum has shown the departments of farm living, costumes and agricultural tools.
