About the museum
“Spittel” is an old word for a hospital. The house on Puschkinstraße is among the oldest buildings in Berga, as it survived the great town fire of 1842. Its roots go back to 1692, when Susanna Barbara von Reitzenstein, née von Watzdorf, set up a foundation for her birthplace; the interest it earned paid for a hospital for the poor and needy. A second foundation for the same purpose was added after the death of Emperor Wilhelm I in 1888, and the two were merged on 1 January 1891 to form the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Stiftung.
Until the 1980s the building was used as a residential house. After a thorough renovation in 1996 a social care service moved in, and from 1998 it stood empty. In 1999 the Bergaer Heimat- und Geschichtsverein took it over as its headquarters. Today the small museum shows collections on regional history and an exhibition of rocks and minerals from the surrounding area; the house also hosts exhibitions on changing themes.
