About the museum
The Derenburg Heimatstube opened in 1981 and was newly furnished in the 1990s in the former Schwanecke family villa on Obermauerstraße. Across five rooms it displays finds and everyday objects from more than 7,000 years of settlement history in the region.
The focus is household life from the late 19th to the mid-20th century, including mangles, old scales, flatirons, and coal-fired kitchen stoves. In addition, there are tools from Derenburg's former crafts, the development of agriculture, and references to former businesses such as energy production and food processing.
Models of the castle and town wall, records of clubs, schools, and children's facilities, and recent local history including the Second World War round out the display. A straw head (Strohkopf) serves as a mascot and greets guests.
