Herbergsmuseum

Germany's only historic journeymen's hostel developed as a museum: a half-timbered house from 1684 with an exhibition on the Walz, the traditional journeyman years of craftsmen.

Opening hoursAdmission from €5

About the museum

The half-timbered house on Bergstraße was built in 1684. From 1884 to 1916 it served as a hostel for traveling journeymen craftsmen of all trades following guild tradition. One of the guests around 1894 was the journeyman carpenter Wilhelm Pieck, who later became president of the GDR.

For this reason, a memorial opened here on January 3, 1976, Pieck's 100th birthday. In 1989 the Blankenburg branch of the Harzklub took over the house and reoriented it toward the life of wandering journeymen around 1900; one room still recalls the former memorial. Since January 2025, a non-profit friends' association has run the museum on a volunteer basis.

On view are the former hostel rooms, including the dining room, lodging room, kitchen, wash house, stable and inner courtyard, as well as an exhibition on the customs and history of the journeyman years. A materials collection and a library of the crafts round out the offering. The museum works closely with present-day journeymen's associations and remains a meeting place for traveling and local journeymen.
