About the museum
In 1906 the Hagen patron and founder of the Folkwang Museum, Karl Ernst Osthaus, commissioned the Flemish architect Henry van de Velde to build his residence. Ready for occupancy in 1908, the house was created as a total work of art (Gesamtkunstwerk) from a single design: furniture, wall decorations, floors, lamps, fabrics and even tableware and cutlery were made to van de Velde's designs. Works by Henri Matisse, Johan Thorn Prikker, Hermann Haller and Ferdinand Hodler were selected during construction and integrated into the architecture.
The villa was meant to crown a planned artists' colony on the Hohenhagen, which was only partially realized. The garden was redesigned in 1913/14 according to plans by the reform architect Leberecht Migge; its final form was elaborately restored in 2022/23. After the property was sold to the city of Hagen in 1927, the estate was preserved.
Today the Hohenhof is a branch of the Osthaus Museum Hagen. Alongside the largely original living rooms, the museum of the "Hagener Impuls" gives an overview of Karl Ernst Osthaus's work. The listed complex is an anchor point of the Route der Industriekultur (Route of Industrial Heritage) and has been part of the "Iconic Houses" network since 2015.
