Die Kaskels – Kommerz, Kunst, Kultur

Marking the Year of Jewish Culture in Saxony, this exhibition portrays the von Kaskel banking family, who helped shape Dresden's economy, music and cultural life in the 19th century and were composers and writers themselves.

About the museum

This townhouse on Hauptstraße was built between 1697 and 1699 and is one of the few surviving houses in the Baroque Quarter dating from the era of Augustus the Strong. According to the inscription beneath the cornice, it has been called "Gottessegen" (God's Blessing) since around 1730; it later gained an additional story and a small tower.

In 1808, the portrait and history painter Gerhard von Kügelgen (1772–1820), a native of Bacharach, moved into an apartment here with his family. His studio became a gathering place for artists and art lovers – the circle included Caspar David Friedrich, then still little known, and Carl Maria von Weber and Goethe were among the guests. In 1820, Kügelgen was murdered on his way home from his vineyard house in Loschwitz; his son Wilhelm recorded the family's life in "Jugenderinnerungen eines alten Mannes" (Childhood Memories of an Old Man).

The house was reconstructed from 1974 to 1980 as part of the rebuilding of Hauptstraße and Neustädter Markt; during the work, painted wooden ceilings from the late 17th century were uncovered in the former Kügelgen apartment. In 1981, the Museum of Dresden Romanticism moved in; today it is part of the Museen der Stadt Dresden (Dresden City Museums).

The exhibition explores Dresden's cultural life between about 1790 and 1830 and introduces the painters, musicians and poets of the Romantic era. Treasures include the studio, recreated after a painting by Georg Friedrich Kersting, portraits by Anton Graff and pieces from the Körner Museum, which was destroyed in 1945. Concerts, readings and lectures are held in the former drawing room.
